Jute basketry is a frequently used production method amongst the jute weavers community in India and is used to make, as the name suggests, jute baskets. An exclusive craft of the local artisans, a jute basket is both functional and eco-friendly, jute being a plant fiber that is renewable, eco-friendly, and very durable. For the art of basketry, the craftsmen first fashion the jute ropes into sturdy but beautiful braids. The same braid is folded and woven such that it becomes a basket. Native artisans are skilled enough to fashion a whole basket out of one long braid without the need for any other patch attachment or extra material. The fact that the basket is handmade, eco-friendly, durable, functional, vegan, and made using one material only, increases its artisanal value ten folds!
